Narbethong House celebrates a facelift

17 Sep, 2009 01:35 PM
On Tuesday morning 8 September residents of Narbethong were joined by staff and members of the public to celebrate the completion of a beautification program which evolved over the last twelve months. The author of the idea was well-know local Jenny Wallace. The Monday quilters who gather in her home each week decided they would like to do something to brighten the days of the elderly who have made their home at Narbethong. The group's focus was the central courtyard and their means the funds raised through the annual Open Garden that Jenny and her team holds in conjunction with the hanging of the quilts in November.

A committee was formed and as often happens in Braidwood from small things big things grow. Successful submissions for financial support to the Braidwood Community Bank and the Veolia Mulwaree Trust, combined with the Monday Quilter's funds, were bolstered by maintenance support from Greater Southern Area Health, to establish the basis of a wonderful project. The secret ingredient however in any task like this, is the band of volunteers who quietly appeared in the garden to prune and weed and the members of service clubs who scrape and paint. The prize for perseverance and generosity must go to Terry Bowman from the Lion's Club who painted his way around the building often single handed. Thank you Terry.

The courtyard is now not only graced with a new look but the outside of the building has been painted, pavers laid inside new timber retaining walls at the front entrance and the entrance arch renovated. One of the visitor's areas has been repainted and new drapes provided.

The courtyard boasts new pavers, a Vergola that allows sunlight and complete shade to be controlled for the residents, outdoor furniture for family visits, raised garden beds and tall glazed pots for the keen gardeners and a beautifully constructed birdcage. A magical bird bath created by our well known potter Richard Murray is a major focus.

The elders of our community are to be treasured and their late life should be one of comfort and care. The Nurse Manager of the MPS Mrs Debbie Oxford Wilson along with her staff and that of Narbethong ensure this care and love. The Beautification Committee wish to thank Debbie for her energy and drive along with the Braidwood Community Bank, Veolia Mulwaree Trust, Jenny and her Team and all the unnamed volunteers who have added the colour and comfort to this vital facility in our community.

Jenny Wallace expressed great joy in her official opening of the renovation whilst Mr Paul Stephenson representing the Veolia Mulwaree Trust and Mr Noel Wisbey Chairperson of the Braidwood Community Bank Board, were proud that their organisations could provide financial support for such a worthy project. The smiles on the faces of the residents as they enjoyed a wonderful sunny morning tea in this beautiful area was sufficient reward for all those involved.
