 Town trying to tune in

Town trying to tune in

21 Jan, 2010 01:20 PM
While more than a few Braidwood residents provide regular talkback sessions and interviews on the ABC, there is no good clear coverage in or around Braidwood.

Over 530 Braidwoodians have signed a petition started by resident Cecile Galiazzo to lobby the Federal Member for Eden Monaro Dr Mike Kelly for installation of an ABC radio repeater antenna on Gillamatong.

The petition read; "We the undersigned, urge the Federal Government, to give due consideration to the installing of a radio reception antenna on Gillamatong.

This basic community service would bring connection to our taxpayer funded ABC radio broadcasts, to keep residents in touch with national and international events and information.

Proper ABC reception could also be vital in the event of emergencies such as bush fires, with many residents living in rural and remote locations.

We believe the financial commitment by Government to be a small investment in this important community service which will enhance communications across the shire."

Galiazzo had recently returned to live in Braidwood and was frustrated at the total lack of ABC radio reception at her new home. She soon found that many people were equally frustrated. Residents across town and around the district receive varying quality of AM and FM reception from none at all to a scratchy service, which is prone to sever interference.

Across the district some residents find better reception with ABC Illawarra, ABC Bega or ABC Canberra.

Galiazzo says "this issue has also raised lots of concern and questions regarding isolation, and communication links for our region."

"While some residents are frustrated at not being able to listen to the cricket in summer, the issue of a single radio station which could provide emergency information in times of natural disaster like bushfire is a very real one."

Galiazzo sent the petition to Dr Kelly prior to Christmas. Dr Kelly responded that he has made representation to the Minister for Communications, Senator Stephen Conroy, in relation to the matter.

"Stay tuned" says Galiazzo.
