Braidwood Quilters Country Luncheon

13 Jul, 2006 12:47 PM
Quilters from Canberra, Burra, Queanbeyan, Southern Highlands, South Coast, Goulburn, Bungendore, Captains Flat and, of course, Braidwood attended the fifth annual Quilters' Country Luncheon held in the National Theatre on Wednesday, July 5.

The guest speaker this year was Lois Evans who had acted as the co-ordinator of the ACT section of the Parliament House Embroidery which was a gift to the new Parliament House from embroiderers from all the State Guilds in Australia. Towards the end of Lois's talk she was joined by June Weatherstone, Braidwood Quilters Inc. President, and Bev Thomas from Canberra, both of whom had worked on the ACT section of the embroidery. They all had amusing stories to tell and enjoyed reminiscing about the intricacies of the great work that was presented to Parliament House before it was officially opened in 1988.

During the lunch a very special hat parade was held to promote the initiative of Melbourne milliner, Waltraud Reiner, the Blue Hat Project. The blue hats, works of art, will be exhibited at Federation Square in September during National Hat Week, and then auctioned to raise funds for the depression support group Beyond Blue.

The annual Quilters Country Luncheon and The Quilt Event are initiatives of Braidwood Quilters Inc to promote the art and tradition of quilting and to increase tourism to Braidwood. Anyone interested in joining Braidwood Quilters or who might like to know a little more about the Blue Hat Project, please do not hesitate to contact President June Weatherstone on 4842 2355 or Publicity Officer Jill McLeod on 4842 2626.
