Did Sam push Lizzie, or did she fall? A compelling tale of loyalty, obsession and retribution, directed by Kate Gaul and performed by the award-winning actor Chrissie Shaw, comes to The National Theatre, Braidwood, for one performance only, on Friday, July 21, commencing at 8.00 pm.
In Sydney, 1938, Lizzie Rivers All Girl Band is about to get its big break when the lead singer goes overboard during a ferry party. Did she fall or was she pushed? Emma, the drummer, is sure she knows and plans her revenge.
This play is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by distinguished author Geoff Page, who will honour us with his attendance at the Braidwood performance. Followers of the celebrated Australian poet will enjoy a production that keeps the silky and hypnotic character of the novel. The play is enriched by the sounds of the times, with tunes played by saxophonist Sylvia Mitchell, and a unique set, designed by Imogen Keen.
Chrissie Shaw, fresh from her success as Laurel in Peta Murray's Salt, takes the stage in Drumming on Water as Emma Patching, now in her 80s, who recalls a very important and memorable part of her life with passion and humour. The play paints a vivid picture of Sydney life at the time, with an element of mystery and intrigue that captures the imagination.
This is an opportunity to celebrate Australian writing that should not be missed. The production has been made possible through the generous support of the ACT Government, The Street Theatre and Tuggeranong Arts Centre. Tickets are $22 and $18 concession and are available from McLeod Gallery, phone 4842 2626.
