Freemasonry in Braidwood

15 Jun, 2006 01:43 PM
The Lodge of Truth Braidwood is amongst the oldest of country Masonic Lodges in NSW, first meeting at Mrs Stoyle's residence on 20th March 1860. Mrs Stoyle's residence stood on the site of the Braidwood Museum which was originally the Oddfellows Hall. First registered under the United Grand Lodge of England, the Lodge of Truth registered under the United Grand Lodge of NSW in 1888 as Lodge of Truth Braidwood No26. The Lodge later held its meeting at the rooms of Mr Larmer and then at the Criterion Hotel, moving to Oddfellows Hall early in the 1890s. Meetings were originally held on the evening of the full moon so there was sufficient light to enable members to travel.

A building committee was appointed in 1892 to find a property suitable to purchase as the Lodge's own hall. The outcome was the purchase of the present building in Elrington St, where the first meeting was held there on 6th June 1906. Alterations and improvements were carried out in the 1920s and again in the 1970s with more improvements made in the 1980s. Today the Lodge of Truth meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month. The charitable work of the Lodge of Truth is well known in the district especially their Annual Wood Raffle and Auction raising in excess of $3000 each year, the proceeds going to assist local organisations. The Lodge of Truth has been working with the Braidwood Fire Brigade donating smoke alarms to the SABRE program run by the brigade. These smoke alarms are installed and maintained by the brigade with batteries supplied by Braidwood Apex.

The Lodge of Truth will be holding their Annual Wood Raffle and Auction this year in Wallace St on Saturday morning June 24th. Look out for the Masons selling tickets, this will be followed by the auction. Show your support by purchasing a ticket and coming along to the auction where you will be guaranteed an excellent load of wood and you will also be supporting your local community.
