At the Show Society Presentation Night the name McGlone came up more than a couple of times, however Brittney McGlone couldn't attend the dinner as she was in Warwick, QLD competing in the Australian Stock Horse Society National Show and Campdraft Championships.
The McGlone family took three horses to QLD. Brent McGlone (19) owns stockhorse mare Buttons, and shows her in hand, and Brittney rides her in all her ridden classes. Sam McGlone also took his mare Girlie to QLD. In Warwick, 16 year old Brittney went on to win the Open Champion Ridden Hack Mare over 5 years on Girlie (Myee Araluen).
At the Canberra Royal Show, Buttons had come 2nd in Led Mare Over 15 hands with Brent, and competed in three ridden classes, Snaffle Bit Mare, Curb Bit over 15 hands and Stock Horse Ridden by a Child Under 18 yrs. Buttons and Brittney went on to win Champion Stock Horse at Canberra. Brittney also won Champion Led Gallaway with Sunny, and Champion Childs Pony with Hurnam out of field of 155.
At the Sydney Royal Show all three horses were placed in every class entered, with Buttons winning Stock Horse Class Ridden by a Child under 18. Brittney was the highest placed junior in the open ASHLA Class and won Led Australian Saddle Pony Gelding 14-14.2hh. With Sunny she won the Champion Ridded Australian Saddle Pony and Brittney was named Reserve Champion Senior girl rider under 18 years, out of a field of around 90.
John and Kerry McGlone moved their family to a property on Cargill's Lane just outside Braidwood 18 months ago, from Winsdor, seeking a better style of country life and more opportunities for their children, Brent 19, Brittney 16, Jack 12 and Sam 10. All children are at Braidwood Central School and Brent is School Captain for 2006.
The family have been showing horses and competing at Sydney Royal for four generations. Brittney's great grandmother Jean Ferguson, passed away last year, but remarked on hearing that Brittney had won the Champion Junior Girl Rider in 2000 in Sydney, that it had "taken the family 50 years to win it!"
However it's not just horses with which the family excel.
Brittney is the Australian All Schools U/17 400m hurdles champion as well as the NSW Combined High Schools 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles champion. This year Brittney was a member of the ACT 4 x 100m relay team that won the Australian U/18 title at the National Athletics Championships in Sydney. Brittney's achievements gained her selection in the Australian U/18 Games Experience Squad which travelled to Melbourne during the Commonwealth Games. Some of the selection factors included the ability to compete in other sports whilst returning a commitment to athletics and showing potential for the future.
Under the guidance of AIS coach Matt Beckenham, Brittney hopes to improve her base strength levels and hurdle technique before the major athletics meets later in the year. One of her goals is to break 61 seconds for the 400m hurdles.
Jack and Sam also travel to Canberra two days a week to train for the North Canberra under-13 division one rugby league team.
