Accident claims local

Barry Dowell from Mongarlowe died at the scene of a single vehicle accident when his four-wheel drive hit a tree travelling east near the showground on Friday around 6pm.

Barry was well known in the Braidwood district for his volunteer work in the community with Braidwood Care and St Vincent de Paul.

Originally from Sydney, where he had retired from insurance broking, Barry 75, and his wife Carmel move to Braidwood 6 years ago. They had been married for 47 years.

Barry is survived by his wife, three of four children Mick, Patricia and Peter and 10 grandchildren. Their daughter Maree died of breast cancer six years ago.

The accident occurred within metres of the fatal accident on New Year's Day, where a 17 year old from Murrumbateman died.

A coroners report into the cause of the accident will be conducted.
