Planning is well underway to celebrate Australia Day in Captains Flat, Braidwood and Bungendore on tomorrow 26 January 2012. The main feature of the celebrations is the presentation of awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year in each of our main towns.
Nominations for these prestigious awards have closed and have been assessed by the panel. Acting General Manager, Bill Ellison, said, “Once again, the standard of nominations for the awards is extremely high. Throughout Palerang, we have many dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly for the benefit of their local community. Presenting Australia Day community awards is one way to recognise the wonderful achievements of some of these volunteers.
Palerang is very fortunate to have former two-time world champion endurance bike rider, Warwick Nowland, as its 2012 Australia Day Ambassador in all three towns. Woolworths is the major sponsor of the Ambassador Program.
Warwick’s impressive list of achievements on the race track began in 1993, when he won his first Australian Championship on a Triumph. In 1997, he became the Australian Formula 1 Champion with Suzuki.
Warwick won his first Endurance World Championship in 2000 riding a Suzuki with a private team. In 2002, he repeated this extraordinary achievement and became the Endurance World Champion on a factory-supported Suzuki GSX R1000. His highest priority now is his young family, and helping people less fortunate than himself. His hobbies include doing property renovations, Motocross and music.
Before presenting the Australia Day awards, Warwick will give the keynote address at each event in Palerang. This is one not to be missed.
Braidwood’s Australia Day event will be held at the Braidwood Services Club, starting at 12.15 pm. A delicious BBQ lunch will be served by the Bowling Club members after the formalities. Entry is free so come along with your family and friends and enjoy our national day in Braidwood.
Other events will be held at Captains Flat starting at 10.00 am for morning tea and later in the day starting at 5.30 pm, a bush dance and BBQ for the whole family at the Council Chambers, Bungendore. Entry is free at all events.
