A problem with the barriers at the Braidwood Jockey Club Braidwood Cup meeting on Saturday caused the cancellation of the meeting. After the running of Race 4, which was a false start, it was decided to abandon the meeting.
Braidwood Jockey Club President Geoff Saville said on behalf of the Committee, that "track conditions were perfect and we were pleased with the weather and the crowd. We had a large amount of nominations resulting in good competition, however due to unforeseen circumstances with the barriers, the jockeys and stewards decided to abandon the meeting because of OH & S issues."
The Jockey Club is still conducting inquiries into the sequence of events that led to the abandonment of the last three races.
A crowd of around 1400 people attended the meeting which was held in near perfect conditions, after last years scorching day.
Jockey Club Secretary Di Izzard elaborated that "the electrical component of the barriers failed, but the manual start system was in working condition and was inspected by the stewards, jockey and committee representative."
Until then the day was going well with races one and two won by trainer Nick Olive from Canberra, with Richard Bensley on board.
Race three the Hannaford Stud/Braidwood Butchery/ Cameron Jackson Memorial Maiden Handicap over 1000m was won by Chief's Trophy trained by local Aaron Clarke and ridden by Tim Phillips.
The $10,000 Country Energy 2010 Braidwood Cup would have seen two local trainers vie for the Cup, with former winner Rocky Cobra trained by Neale Lavis' and Richard Clarke's Granite Bluff amongst the field of nine entered.
After the race four was called a 'no race', the major sponsor Cortona Resources redirected some of the sponsorship to give each of the Best Dressed categories and extra $100 in the prizes.
Braidwood women took out all the best dressed fields this year with Kate Goodwin winning the under 16, Laura Jackson the under 30 and Domenica Hannaford taking out the Ladies Best Dressed section.
Stuart Spiers from Sydney won the Best Dressed Man, with Brent McGlone and Melissa Shoemark taking the best dressed couple.
Local Police were happy with conduct at the racecourse but were called to several incidents at the Braidwood Hotel. With nine Police in attendance for the night, some visitors and the odd local had alcohol confiscated under the Alcohol Free Zone legislation. The night saw three arrests with multiple charges laid and a number of on the spot fines were also issued.
