The Minister for Education and Training Verity Firth has announced a list of schools which will be the first to have unflued gas heaters replaced including Braidwood and Bungendore.
“Following the release of a report by the Woolcock Institute, the Government also announced that it would replace all unflued gas heaters in every school.
As part of the $15 million replacement program, the Education Department consulted with the Asthma Foundation, COUGH, Secondary Principals Council, Primary Principals Association, NSW Teachers Federation and the Federation of P&C’s.
The stakeholder group unanimously endorsed use of Bureau of Meteorology data to establish the priority school list. Locally 18 heaters will be replaced at Captains Flat Public School, Bungendore Public School 41, Tarago Public School 8, Windellama Public School 6, and Braidwood Central School 50.
Steve Whan said “along with my Federal colleague Mike Kelly and several of my State Labor colleagues representing cooler seats, I lobbied the Minister to get a program underway. In doing this Mike Kelly and I were supporting a number of very active parent groups lobbying to see the unflued heaters replaced. Those parent groups, particularly at
Bungendore and Braidwood Schools, have certainly had their voices heard by the Keneally
Government.
All up there will be 768 heaters replaced in the Monaro electorate across 27 Schools.
There are still a further 51,000 unflued gas heaters in NSW public schools to be replaced.
