The Majors Creek Progress Association tennis committee, represented by Murray Harrex and Narelle Doherty, accepted a $12,000 cheque from the Braidwood Community Bank, represented by Mary Mathias, a Director and Simone Dickson a member of staff.
This money will assist with the refurbishment of the village's tennis courts and will help provide an all-weather hard court, practice wall and basketball hoop at the Majors Creek Recreation Oval.
Mrs Doherty believes the bank's contribution has been invaluable. "Our Community Bank has shown incredible support of the Majors Creek community over the past few years and this funding means the tennis court project will now become a reality. The facility will provide a place to meet, an enjoyable and healthy leisure pursuit for village residents and a sporting outlet for the area's increasing number of children" she said.
Mr Harrex described Majors Creek residents as motivated and generous, backing projects like the tennis court restoration with donations and offers of in-kind assistance.
"We're lucky to have so many people willing to get in and do the work to ensure ‘The Creek’ remains the great place it is," he said.
The tennis committee has raised more than $50,000 and has begun the tender process.
Other financial contributions came from local fundraising, Cortona Resources, The Veolia Mulwaree Trust, The Department of Sport and Recreation, and Federal Government infrastructure funding. Work is expected to begin by September and be complete by December.
The Braidwood Preschool was the second recipient of a grant from the Braidwood Community Bank. Mr Noel Wisbey, the Chair of the Bank Board and Helen Farley a staff representative presented Mrs Kathy Toirkens, the Director of the Braidwood Preschool, with a cheque for $11,000 to enable roof repairs which will include the installation of insulation.
Mrs Toirkens said the parents constantly work hard to raise funds and are very grateful for the generosity of the Community Bank, particularly in light of the reduced Government funding they are facing. In recent times this small but committed group of parents has provided new curtains, air conditioning, and the painting of the building. The kitchen refurbishment is next and part of the overall project. Mrs Toirkens commented that "The repairs that this Community Bank grant will provide will ensure the reduction of our energy footprint. Something the group is very conscious of."
Mr Wisbey, a founding Board member, said he was proud that the Community Bank had been able thus far to return approximately $140,000 to the district in grants, sponsorship and donations. Mr Wisbey reiterated that one of the major benefits of having a Community bank is that the more the locals take their business to the bank the more the community gains in financial support for projects such as the Majors Creek tennis courts and the Braidwood Preschool roof.
