Braidwood's Heritage Celebrations

16 Apr, 2008 03:00 AM
Members of The Festival of Braidwood Committee ( a sub-committee of the Palerang Council Cultural Development Committee) are working hard to organise this year's heritage celebrations which will take place over the weekend of May 3 and 4. They need the community's participation to make the festival successful and hope that those members of the community who have not contacted the committee will do so quickly to lock arrangements into place.

On Saturday, there will be a Colonial Market Place in Ryrie Park (Braidwood's traditional market place) with stalls, yummy food, colonial skill demonstrations including blacksmithing and entertainment. A blackboard concert will be held in the morning - if you wish to participate you will need to put your name on the blackboard in the entertainment area early in the morning and prepare a fifteen minute slot. Musicians, poets, dancers, singers - all will be welcome. After the parade there will be further entertainment in the park.

The street parade will commence at 1.00 pm on Saturday with assembly in Wallace Street on the southern side of Lascelles Street at 12.30. The street will be closed between 12.30 and 2 pm. Floats, vintage, veteran and classic cars, motorbikes (we hope), service vehicles, horse-drawn vehicles (including the wonderful M.H.O'Rourke horse-drawn hearse), adults and children and anything else that your imagination can create are invited to participate.

A Students' Photographic Competition is in progress and entry forms are available from McLeod Gallery and Jan Francis at 49 Lascelles Street. There is prize money and the opportunity to have your winning photo used as a Braidwood postcard. Start your photographic career by entering a fabulous photo of something special in Braidwood.

An exhibition of the entries will be housed in the National Theatre over the weekend together with a collectables exhibition (people who would like to show off their special collections please contact one of the committee members listed below).

This year great prize money is available for decorated shop windows - $100 first prize, $60 second and $40 third prize.

More about the Festival and the Sunday May 4 program next week. A full program list will be available closer to the event. Information about the weekend is available from committee members Jan Francis on 4842 2887, Jill McLeod on 4842 2626 and June Weatherstone on 4842 2355.
