Burn off activities

22 Aug, 2001 08:02 AM
Property owners are to be reminded of their responsibilities when conducting burning activities on their properties.

Rural Fire Service Brigades have been required to respond to numerous fires recently as a result of private burn off activities escaping control from property owners.

Some areas of the district have the situation of having large volumes of very dry grass and combined with strong winds can potentially lead to problems occurring.

They are also advised to be aware of weather forecasts to ensure it is safe to carry out the burn at that time.

Property owners and occupiers are legally responsible for preventing fire from escaping their lands as a result of fire lit by that person.

Property owners are reminded that they should notify their immediate neighbours at least 24 hours prior to carrying out burns.

It is also advised if they could contact the RFS Brigade Captain for their area or contact Tallaganda Fire Control to advise of their intentions. This can prevent the situation where brigades are responded unnecessarily to reported fires only to find they were not required.

Please, as a matter of courtesy to our volunteers, who give up their time to attend fires, a simple phone call is all it takes to prevent these situations occurring.

For further enquiries please contact Fire Control on 4842 2516.
