Last week saw the beginning of two Canberra debating competitions in which Braidwood Central School students yet again demonstrated their exceptional talents.
Junior secondary students Grace Dickinson, Rosie Harris, Tom Willding and Zoe Price convincingly argued against Mary McKillop for a resumption in whaling, while intermediate students Gabe Dickinson, Michael Ison, Kodie Woodbridge and Gavin Whitehouse successfully put the view that Australia should compensate the stolen generation against a Canberra Girls Grammar team.
Our students spoke intelligently and with a degree of assertiveness that took their oppositions by surprise. They will speak again this week on electing the judiciary and raising the drinking age to 21. Yet again our debaters shine. Excellent speaking guys!
On Monday night Gabe Dickinson, Michael Ison, Kodie Woodbridge and Gavin Whitehouse travelled again to Canberra to debate a Canberra Girls Grammar team on the topic that judges should be elected.
Arguing that if Australia truly believed in a democracy which had as one of its cornerstones the separation of powers then to have judges appointed by two men in dark suits, namely the Prime Minister and his Attorney General was little more than a farce. The Braidwood team, with a superior knowledge of the workings of the state, won convincingly.
Last week two BCS students, Rebecca Klomp and Kodie Woodbridge travelled to Tuross to represent Braidwood at the Regional Student Representative Council Meeting. The students returned inspired and ready to turn the Braidwood SRC into a student run and focussed organisation that delivers results for the student body, the town and the broader community. Their enthusiasm was infectious, as was their commitment to building a stronger and more vibrant SRC.
PRINCIPAL'S PUBLIC SPEAKING AWARD
From year 3 to year 11, over 20 Braidwood students have spent the last week or so preparing for this Thursday night when they will strut their wise ideas and well chosen words at the Braidwood Central School Principal's Public Speaking Award at the school Library at 6pm. Students who do well on the night will go on to speak at a range of state competitions and events held throughout the year. Family and their friends are all welcome. I am sure we all wish them well.
