Companion Animal Management

10 Jul, 2001 10:36 AM
It’s time again for your annual Council registration of companion animals (dogs). Annual registration is due on June 30 2001. Upon payment of the registration charge, a collar tag identifying your animal will be issued for the financial year.

This is the last year of annual registration. As from July 2002, all companion animals* will be required to be microchipped and lifetime registered. Microchipping is required to be done by a practising veterinarian and lifetime registration can be obtained through Council on behalf of the NSW Department of Local Government.

“In Tallaganda Shire, over 50 per cent of dogs impounded were destroyed by euthanasia last year. It’s not a record we are proud of,” said Mr Alan Bawden, Council’s Manager of Environment and Planning. “Unfortunately these dogs had no identification, and were not claimed within the seven day impounding period,” he added. “Permanent, lifetime identification and registration allows Council to identify the owner and return the pet. Council would much prefer to return pets with a warning to the owner than impound the pet,” said Mr Bawden.

“Wandering, uncontrolled dogs and cats are an increasing problem in the Shire and, like most things, the cost of providing this service is also increasing. Responsibility by companion animal owners in controlling pets and having permanent lifetime registration ensures that your pet will be in the right place all the time,” said Mr Bawden.

Brochures are available at Council or visit www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/compan.htm for more information.
