Concerns about garbage

10 Jul, 2001 10:35 AM
I have some concerns about our local garbage tip and the fees imposed on ratepayers. I have just returned from taking my rose bush cuttings to the tip, and I am angry. I don’t have the equipment to mulch and I thought that the tip did. I thought that the refuse was mulched and resold, but as far as I can see, every time we visit the dump lately, they are burning the refuse rather that re-cycling as much as possible. The dump these days does not seem to be kept tidy or the refuse in any sort order, which would encourage more recycling.

We have been told that the tip is running out of room but if the garden refuse was mulched and resold and the building refuse separated so that residents could easily get to old wood it could be re-used for firewood or building materials. Many residents would re-use items from the tip if they were kept separate and easily accessible. MAUREEN and DAVID ROBERTSON, Duncan Street, Braidwood.
