Council Supports Tourism Proposal

19 Apr, 2007 12:54 PM
Cheryl Raper briefed Council at its meeting last Thursday on the project Braidwood Tourism is putting up for consideration for an Australian Tourism Development Grant of $250,000. Called The 'King's Highway of Discovery, the project aims to maximise tourist growth in/to the rural region between Canberra and Bateman's Bay/Moruya on the South Coast of NSW.

It's about tapping into the 3,000,000 cars that use the Kings H'way each year.

The goal is to establish in the minds of travellers that the corridor that connects the coast to the nation's capital, along the King's H'way, has some of Australia's most pristine wilderness along with significant heritage towns, villages & truly rural lifestyles, for the visitors to meander through at their leisure.

This project is a collaboration of Queanbeyan Tourism, B&V Tourism, Bungendore Tourism,& Eurobodalla Tourism. With B&V being the lead organization.as a not for profit Incorporation.

Based on tourism NSW research 73% of tourists pre plan their holidays via the Web.

The funding will be used to market the product "King's Highway of Discovery through the development of a very pro active web site, that invites potential visitors to find and actively explore their tourism preferences easily, quickly and engagingly.

Also a touring brochure, advertising the regions assets and attractions and promotion through the wider VIC's, touring publications and leisure expos.

The ultimate aim of this project is that at the end of the funding period (2years) the project would become self funded thru business Web advertising.

The Palerang Council agreed to provide a letter of support for this project and to note in the letter that even though they would act as the lead agency for the Bungendore Rail Trail project, also up for a ATD grant, they had no preference for that project over the ‘King's Highway of Discovery' project.

A decision on the funding should be known by early May.
