An exhibition of textile work by Braidwood's Solvig Baas Becking, Pam McDougall, Fay Skyring and Di Landsdown, will be opened at Craft ACT's Gallery 2 in Civic on Thursday 24th May at 6pm. The exhibition will be opened by Emeritus Professor David Williams, Chair of ANUs Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Solvig Baas Becking had been an active practising artist for over 40 years. Weaver Pam McDougall and Fay Skyring saw the need to celebrate her work, her tireless commitment to promoting the arts in Australia and teaching through mentoring. The exhibition Decades and Diversity is a celebration of her knowledge and skills passed on through generations by those she taught.
Solvig taught McDougall, who taught Skyring, who mentored Lansdown.
Baas Becking came to Australia from Holland in 1963 and set up a studio in Canberra. She had trained in Sweden as a weaver and spent another year at the Academy of Applied Art in Amsterdam.
She moved to Mongarlowe in 1974, and is now a resident of Narbethong House in Braidwood. Baas Becking was awarded and AM in 2003 for Services to craft movements in Australia.
A bus has been hired for those wishing to attend the opening. The bus will leave Ryrie Park at 4.15pm on Thursday 24th May to get to the opening in Canberra for 6pm. (Cost $15, book with Sandra von Sneidern 4842 8006. Bring food to eat on the way home.)
