With a mixed bag of weather over the Christmas holiday period from extreme heat to very wet, tourists have streamed into Braidwood, visiting families and friends, or on their annual pilgrimage to the South Coast, or just 'having a look' at the place.
Over the Christmas, New Year period, this year most businesses co-ordinated, through BAVT, (Braidwood & Villages Tourism) their opening hours to offer visitors services in the town and this was appreciated by all visitors, commenting that the town was 'jumping', reported Cheryl Raper from the Braidwood Visitor Centre (VIC).
To the end of 2007 Braidwood VIC had recorded just under 9,000 visitors calling in seeking information on the town and what the region had to offer.
The most frequent inquiry was for a camping ground in the town, the next was to get the tourist brochure with its historic map, followed by getting information on surrounding National Parks, particularly the Monga N.P and the Deua N.P.
The most frequently received complaint at the VIC was about the 'filthy' state of the public toilets and the bad impression it creates with the touring public. The next was the lack of parking in the main street.
The wet weather up north has meant that many people changed their travel arrangements and have come down to the South Coast. Requests for caravan camping on the south coast through the VIC have been considerable, where many parks were booked out, revealing further need for van park facilities in Braidwood.
New businesses in town such as jeweller William Verdon's Workshop above Nambawan Coffee shop have reported a 'good run' over the holidays, and the Bernardoff's said that this Christmas was a better holiday period than last year.
