Drought and depression forum tomorrow

14 Feb, 2007 09:17 AM
As part of beyondblue's National Drought Campaign - Don't beat about the bush! - a series of depression-awareness forums will kick off in Braidwood tomorrow, February 15th at 7.30pm

The first of around 60 public forums focusing on depression during the drought and where to get help are being organised in eastern Australia by fertiliser company Incitec Pivot with support from beyondblue: the national depression initiative, and is hosted in Braidwood by Landmark Daniel Walker.

beyondblue CEO Leonie Young will speak at the forum about beyondblue's National Drought Campaign - Don't beat about the bush!

"We want to get the message out that help is available in these tough times. Depression is common and can be serious, but effective treatments are available.

"People shouldn't be afraid or ashamed to talk to their doctor if they've been feeling unwell, stressed, down or drinking and smoking more than usual. These are often the first signs of depression," she said.

Incitec Pivot's Manager for the Southern Tablelands, Noel Trevaskis of Goulburn said: "Depression can affect anyone at any time. We know the drought is putting pressure on families and we want them to know help is available."

Noel, who was awarded an OAM for his efforts in raising awareness of depression, will speak at the Braidwood forum about his personal experience of depression and his recovery.

Professor Bryan Rodgers of ANU's National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health will talk about the signs and symptoms of depression, available treatments and where to get help.

For more information about depression, anxiety and related substance-use disorders, available treatments and where to get help call 1300 22 4636 or visit www.beyondblue.org.au

The forum will be held at the Braidwood Servicemen's Club and admission is free.
