Effluent control at Braidwood Saleyards

16 May, 2001 01:31 PM
Council, at its April Council meeting, resolved to proceed with effluent control works at the Braidwood Saleyards at an estimated cost of $15,950.

The work involves the construction of diversion banks to divert clean runoff around the site and a system of kerb and guttering, dishdrains, letter box pits and pipes to correct the effluent. Effluent will be diverted into two 105,000 litre underground reinforced tanks and then pumped 650 metres through 75mm pipe to the Sewerage Treatment Works.

Works will also be undertaken on the Truck Wash Bay.

The initial proposal considered by Council was based on catching the first 10mm of run off from the saleyards but has subsequently been amended, as a condition of funding from the Sydney Catchment Authority, to now catch the first 20.2mm of run off.

As a consequence, the cost increased quite considerably and Council has resolved to approach the Sydney Catchment Authority for additional funding over the $100,000 so far committed by the Authority to the project to meet those additional requirements.

The balance of the funds for the works will be met from the environmental levy of $1 per head of cattle passing through the yards that was put in place a couple of years ago.
