 FEDERAL AGENDA BLACKSPOT - 'UNACCEPTABLE'

FEDERAL AGENDA BLACKSPOT - 'UNACCEPTABLE'

08 Feb, 2012 09:16 AM
Member for Monaro John Barilaro has called on more action to be done to bring the telecommunication infrastructure in the Monaro region to an acceptable standard.

"For a region that is a stone's throw from the Nation's Capital it is not acceptable to have third world mobile coverage and significant radio black spots," Mr Barilaro said.

"It is one of the top complaints that I receive when I travel around the electorate, and it is high time for my Federal counterparts to take action."

It is the responsibility of the Commonwealth Government to ensure adequate telecommunication infrastructure. There are longstanding mobile reception blackspots in existence across the Monaro and there is inadequate radio reception, even in major areas such as Braidwood.

"It is unacceptable for the Federal Government to allow an area like Braidwood to go without ABC Radio," Mr Barilaro.

"With ABC Radio being a crucial point of information in a natural disaster, this is a serious public safety issue."

In order to address some of the telecommunication issues in the Monaro, the Federal Government would need to invest in a radio repeater in Braidwood and several mobile phone towers across the region.

"I want both the Federal Opposition and the current Federal Government to commit to fixing this problem."

"I do not want to hear the Federal Member Mike Kelly resting on his laurels about NBN broadband investment while corners of my electorate are still in the stone-age."

"Nobody will want to do business in the Monaro if you can't make a phone call. We need the Federal Government to finally fix this problem and unlock the potential of our region."

At the end of 2009 a petition over 500 signatures was presented to Member for Eden Monaro Dr Mike Kelly asking for a radio repeater.

I always said the nationals were great at finding someone else to blame but not so good at solutions .... In this case John, it might be worth remembering that the Howard Government sold off the National Transmission Agency, thus privatising the management of radio and television transmitors. That means Mike Kelly cant just phone the Minister up and say can you fix this blackspot. Very frustrating I agree and something I campaigned against when the Howard Government did it - unfortunately without any support from the Nationals.

Maybe Mr Barilaro should refer to the new WH&S legislation .... Safety implications of that stupid photo.

Good on John Barilaro, he gets the thumbs up for regional residents in NSW out of sight too easily forgotten about when it comes to reception and technology needs.

Sitting in Jerabomberra, and Queanbeyan it's the furtherest thing from residents minds who live there with good reception.

while those in Braidwood and other places are left out?

Time it was fixed up and corrected.

Radio reception? Try Captains Flat! Awful on every band, even for our so called emergency broadcaster, 666 ABC. No-one in any level of government seems to care.

The Federal Member might like to recall that the telecommunications responsibility for issue like this was removed from the Fed Govt when his mob they sold off Telstra. This now a commercial/free market responsibility and decision. Without the necessary subscriber base the private telcos wont invest in the infrastructure. The NBN initiative in part hopes to redress a portion of this problem but a 3G or 4g phone service is still not covered. Similarly the ABC must operate as if a commercial entity in this regard and again will invest on a ROI calculation. Chooks coming home to roost.

Describing anything in Australia as equivalent to 'third world' conditions is incredibly self indulgent. This sort of comparison has no place in a discussion about mobile phone coverage.

Yes the 'bottom' right hand corner of NSW has always been a black hole in terms of telecoms and broadcasting. (Mind you some areas of Canberra are also.)

I wrote a comment last week ... it was not favorable to Mr Barilaro and has mysteriously disappeared. However the core argument is that the Federal Government is no longer responsible for the provision of mobile communications infrastructure... the Liberals organised that so he should put the blame were it belongs, with his side of politics. The NBN delivers internet services, however a bonus is that fixed line phone services may be accommodated or wireless/3G in some circumstances. This is being done well and is on track despite objections from Mr Barilaro's party.
