The day was organised by Daniel Walker Landmark and the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Council. About 50 people turned up to see Neville and his wife Judy erect 120 metres stocktite fence. Jamie & Rhyll have been fencing tree shelter belts as part of a Landcare Farming for the Long Haul project. Neville demonstrated to the interested onlookers several different fencing knots which have been tested and proved under paddock conditions by Neville during his 30 year professional fencing career. He showed real finesse in his finishing techniques leaving neat knots that in another context could be mistaken for the work of a fine jeweller. Landmark provided a splendid bar-b-que lunch to finish off the mornings events.
After lunch a tree planting demonstration was conducted with the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Councils tractor mounted Youmans tree planter. The tree planter is three point linkage mounted behind a medium sized tractor. A single operator sits on the tree planter and places the tube stock into a pre ripped line, press wheels then firm the tube stock into place. The machine works well in lighter country in long straight lines enabling up to five hundred or more tube stock to be planted by only two people in a day. In heaver soils a lot more attention needs to be paid to insure the tube stock is not left sitting in an open rip line. Whilst large amounts of trees can be planted in a day with just the two operators it is handy to have a couple of extra hands on deck to make sure the trees are planted properly, put a tree guard on and water the plant in. The planter can be hired from the
