Forest rescuer’s life on a line

19 Sep, 2001 07:42 AM
Last week police moved into Monga State Forest to forcibly remove forest rescuers from a contentious woodchip operation.

On Monday two people had been arrested, others have been fined and removed from the forest.

At 2.30pm last Monday police prepared to cut the cables supporting a platform which had held out State Forest’s bulldozers. This action could put the life of this peaceful protester at risk.

“It is terrifying that State Forests would ask police to risk the safety of this peaceful protester,” said Annie Coleman from The Wilderness Society.

“That State Forests would disregard the concern of the community and force this level of conflict mirrors their heavy handed tactics in our public forests,” said Annie Coleman.

“We trust that the police will approach this situation with an even hand, ensuring that the safety of the non-violent forest rescuers is put before any lesser concerns,” said Coleman.
