Goonan to take a seat at Palerang Council

19 Mar, 2009 02:09 PM
In the final count on Tuesday morning, Goonan had 3012 votes, 143 votes ahead of Richard Holding, another candidate from Bywong. Mark Horan from Braidwood was knocked out after the first count with 2276 first preference votes.

All three candidates were unsuccessful in the previous election.

Ms Goonan, who has a PhD in chemistry/biochemistry from UNSW, grew up in a small country town.

In her election statement Goonan said, "I feel that currently Council do not give sufficient attention to the social needs of local people. If elected, I will also focus on the social needs of our people, which to date appear to have no particular champion on Council. Having raised my family in the Bywong community for over twenty years, I have a strong understanding of regional living. I think that local contact is very important to the people of our region and I believe that I can help fulfil a social need by working closely with local community groups and individuals."

"I have always been a 'people' person. This has been balanced and integrated with my scientific research in chemistry/biochemistry, my family business background, and my involvement in government policy. This mix of experiences has given me an objective, flexible and caring approach to things" she said.

Ms Goonan ran as an independent candidate, although was clearly supported by Cr Richard Graham in the campaign.

On Tuesday Ms Goonan said "The voters have decided. I look forward to working co-operatively with the community and the councillors going forward. We have to work in a unified fashion."

There were 7226 formal votes cast and informal votes in the by-election.
