Grant to assess collection

29 Nov, 2007 02:43 PM
The Braidwood and District Historical Society Inc. has been awarded a $4,070 Community Heritage Grant to fund a significance assessment of the collection of its museum in Braidwood. The grant was announced at the National Library of Australia, Canberra, on Tuesday 13 November.

In 2007, grants worth $428,300 were distributed to 85 community heritage groups from around Australia to assist in the identification and preservation of community owned, but nationally significant heritage collections. In addition, Christine Wright from the Braidwood Historical Society attended a three-day intensive preservation and collection management workshop held at the National Library, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive.

Christine Wright said that the grant was important in supporting the effort to preserve the collection of the Braidwood Museum at the grassroots level. "The grant provides the funds and the workshop the expertise to help protect our collection and make it accessible."

In announcing the awards, the National Library Director-General Jan Fullerton said the program, which began in 1994, has surpassed expectations. "It has been taken up by groups throughout Australia, ensuring the longevity of nationally significant collections."

The Braidwood Museum is seeking volunteers to help with our exciting collection of artefacts, photographs and documents. If you have any skills that you think might be useful, please email braidwood@westnet.com.au or leave a message on the museum phone 4842.2310. We also need volunteers to help man the desk at the museum, so if you can spare 3 hours a month, please call us.
