Happy 80th Birthday 1st Braidwood Scouts

13 Apr, 2008 10:22 AM
Fine weather and an excellent turn-up made Saturday's celebration of 80 years of Scouting in Braidwood an overwhelming success. Current and former Scouts, Cubs, Joeys Venturers, Guides and Leaders, as well as district representatives. all came together for an excellent afternoon.

The kids enjoyed a range of activities from abseiling off of the roof of the Scout Hall and archery to clambering inside a makeshift cave and drawing inside a vintage Scout tent. The Scouts also took the opportunity to interview and video record former Scouts, Guides, and Leaders, and found out some interesting facts about what Scouting used to be like. For example, did you know that Mr. Ian Robertson's father, the Reverend Robertson, restarted Scouting locally in the 1940s? Or that during the war, activities were limited because of petrol and food rationing?

One highlight of the day was the cutting of the commemorative cake by Margaret Royds and John Maddrell. Margaret and John were the oldest former Scouts/Guides at Saturday's celebration. John was in 1st Braidwood Scouts, and Margaret was in the Guides in Sydney, both in the early 1940s. Margaret even had her old Guides hat with her. Both wished the group well for future success.

Another highlight of the day was provided by Penny Ruzicka, who was a Guide in Tanzania in the 1950s. Penny's mother worked for Olave Lady Baden-Powell, who was World Chief Guide from 1930, and the wife of Lord Baden-Powell, who founded Scouts and Girl Guides. To celebrate 80 years of Scouting in Braidwood, Penny presented to the group a personal letter written to her by Lady Baden-Powell in 1957, which in part describes her visit to Australia. Along with the letter was a biography of her from 1957 called The World Chief Guide.

It was great to see Scouting so strong after eight decades, and we invite our local community to participate in the years to come.
