The Braidwood Junior Redbacks kicked off their season with the Under 10's playing in a curtain raiser to the ACT Brumbies on Saturday night at Canberra Stadium. They managed to defeat the Griffith Blacks 5 tries to 4 in a very hard fought match with even a bloody nose to prove how tough the game was.
Griffith managed 2 quick tries which had the crowd worried that we were in for a white wash but the Redbacks came back. Callum Conroy started it all with a quick 20 metre run up the blind to bring play up near the Griffith line. With our senior players in the forwards, we were soon dominating the rucks and mauls and Curtis Bennett picked up a loose ball and busted through the defence to score our first try in front of what was by now a huge and vocal crowd. Spirited mauling by Ayden Sherriden and Mitch Bennett maintained possession and gave Harry Fry clean ball to deliver to the backs.
Some great covering tackles from Isaac Quattromini and Matt Faulkner saved certain tries and strong runs from Harry Evans and Josh Storey kept the Redbacks at the right end of the field. Sam Daniher, in his first game of rugby, showed great skills and scored his first try in what I am sure will be many for the season. Will Shoemark also attacked and defended strongly, showing some of his grandfathers and great uncles football skills. Mitch Bennett was rewarded for all his hard work by scoring a fantastic try and Nick Asimus and Matt Galvin both had great games.
Jack Asimus came on to replace an injured Curtis Bennett and made an immediate impact on the game. After controlling the ball in the rucks and making some desperate tackles he pounced on a loose ball and ran the full length of the field, weaving his way through the opposition to score. After picking up his second try in the last half in similar fashion he was named "Player of the Competition" and given the honour of carrying the ball on for the Brumbies.
Everyone was impressed with their first hit out for the season with all of the boys having an excellent game which bodes well for the Goulburn competition when it starts next term. Thanks to all the parents for their help on the night and to Simon Bennett for driving the bus. To my surprise we didn't lose anyone at the ground. After training on Friday we will be having an AGM and all parents are invited.
