Kaylie wins Vocational Prize

07 Dec, 2006 12:46 PM
Braidwood's Kaylie Newell has been awarded a $2000 Australian Vocational Student Prize. Federal Member Gary Nairn announced the names of several "outstanding" local students to be awarded the 2006 Australian Vocational Student Prize.

"This important $2,000 prize will be awarded to Kaylie Newell of the Braidwood Central School, Megan Tarlinton of the Bega High School and Stacey Wood of the Lumen Christi Catholic College, for demonstrating exceptional skills, commitment and achievement while undertaking an Australian School-based Apprenticeship, or a Vocational Education and Training in Schools programme as part of their senior secondary certificate," Mr Nairn said.

"This commitment recognises vocational and technical education training as a valuable and important pathway for students," said Mr Nairn.

"Vocational education pathways in schools allow students, as part of their senior secondary school certificate, to study towards accredited vocational and technical education qualifications and competencies," Mr Nairn said. "Students develop a greater understanding of the world of work and gain industry-specific skills and experience to assist with planning and pursuing their career pathways."

"I congratulate Kaylie Newell, Megan Tarlinton and Stacey Wood on their great achievements and wish them continued success in their training and careers," Mr Nairn concluded.

Kaylie has just completed year 12 at Braidwood Central School where she

studied the VET course in Primary Industries, which results in a nationally accredited certificate qualification. After finishing high school, Kaylie can continue her studies in this field through the TAFE system.

In addition to winning this outstanding award, Kaylie was runner-up in the VET Student Competition in Primary Industries. This included events in shearing, fencing and tractor-driving.
