With 20 per cent of votes still to be counted, sitting member Mike Kelly has edged ahead in preferences, in a result poised on a knife’s edge.

Dr Kelly leads by around 1,500 votes and a margin of just over two per cent, but that margin is closer to eight per cent with preferences distributed.

The progress figures at 10.30pm were:

Mike Kelly (Labor) – 31,120

David Gazard (Liberal) – 29,533

Catherine Moore (Greens) – 6,559

Ray Buckley (Independent) – 847

Olga Quilty (LDP) – 841

Tom Gradwell (Family First) – 614

Ursula Bennett (CDP) – 484

Frank Fragiacomo (Independent) - 441
