Krawarree Ballalaba Historical Group

12 Jun, 2001 03:06 PM
On Sunday, May 6, a very successful get-together was held at the Gundillion Hall. Descendants of the Berry, Cunningham, Dempsey, Flack, Gumm, Hart, Hindmarsh, Horne, Izzard, Laurie, Mackey, Smith and Warren pioneering families gathered with past and present landholders to revisit the days of the Krawarree-Ballalaba district.

Numerous photographs, maps and memorabilia of earlier times were on display. Stories and information were exchanged by the many identities present. Some personal recollections spanned the 1920s to the present day. Peter Smith of Woolla was on hand to take copies of old photos connected with the district.

The purpose of the gathering was to establish a basis for a photo exhibition planned for November 24 and 25, 2001 at the Gundillion Hall. Focus of the exhibition will be a display depicting the history of early pioneers and their lifestyles.

Funding for this project has been made available to the Krawarree Ballalaba Historical Group through the Southern Tablelands Regional Arts and Regional Arts NSW in the form of a Small Town Kick-Start Programme.

This grant now makes it possible to begin tracing the local history of the area From Ballalaba to the Badja and Beyond.

The group is in the process of assembling items for the exhibition. Many photographs are already available. However, the group welcomes anybody with photos relevant to the district or anybody interested in being part of the project to contact Yvette Conaghan on 4847 1125, Ricky Cooper on 4847 1182 or Jenette Hindmarsh on 4847 1115.
