 Krawarree field day

Krawarree field day

28 Nov, 2001 08:10 AM
On Tuesday November 20 some forty interested landholders attended a field day to look and hear about controls used against the noxious weed, scotch broom.

As well as chemical controls the use of fire was spoken about. Tallaganda Fire Control Officer Doug Willcoxson, informed the group of the landholders responsibilities prior to lighting fires. The issuing of permits and the correct procedures was addressed.

Fire, as a tool to control scotch broom aids in getting some of the seed reserves germinated. These reserves are massive in number and can remain viable for more than eighty years.

Dr Andy Shepherd from CSIRO Entomology spoke on the biological control program. The biological agent, Leucoptera spartifoliella was released on the broom infestations in 1993. This year is the first year that the populations have increased to a level that has enabled further distributions of the agent around the shire.

Landholders collected cuttings from infested plants and took home to distribute on their properties in areas difficult to control by other means. The distribution of biological agents does not eliminate landholder responsibilities from continuing other controls. Bio controls are only one element of an integrated management system.

The field day was held on the property of Krawarree of James and Mandy OíBrien. The OíBrienís have assisted with bio program since the beginning in 1990 and the first release in 1993.

James spoke about the different methods how the family have attacked the broom. His efforts are visible in other paddocks where continual treatments have and are continuing.
