Landcare Granites Tour

07 Mar, 2008 12:56 PM
22 people attended the recent Landcare Granites Tour to inspect tree planting sites on four farms around the Braidwood district.

Each of the farms had different underlying geology and soils, and the tree planting processes on each farm varied. The Landholders on each of the four farms also had different reasons for planting trees. For example, some landholders wanted to create wide native vegetation corridors for wildlife and environmental benefits while others seemed to want trees more for agricultural benefits such as stock and pasture shelter.

The techniques employed to develop the trees on farms also differed. Some farmers ripped and mounded, then planted with some follow-up watering if the tubestock showed signs of drying or if there was little rain after planting the trees. Other farmers sprayed sites prior to direct drilling with native tree seed or used post hole diggers to drill individual tubestock holes.

Native plant species also varied from farm to farm with differences related to landscape changes dictating which species would be planted. There was some vigorous discussion about preparation, spraying, mounding and follow-up watering and selection of species across different landscapes and for different management purposes.

Over all, many of the farmers in attendance commented on how informative the tour was and a number of farmers have varied or modified their tree planting processes as a result.

Fact sheets have been developed for each of the farms visited and plant species lists are also available for those interested in identifying what native tubestock species to plant on their property. Landcare members can apply for funding assistance under phase 6 of the Re-vegetating the Braidwood Granites program. Many thanks to Andrew and Trina Balmain, Geoffrey and Sally White, Tim and Sandra Raynolds and Martin Royds and Patricia Solomon for showing tree planting on their farms to members of the Landcare Granites Tour.
