Last minute motion on climate change

04 Sep, 2008 04:55 PM
The motion continued that “in adopting this resolution, the outgoing Council acknowledges there is overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is a reality, the consequences of which are likely to include: extremes such as hotter weather, with the 11 hottest years in history having all in the last 13 years, continuation of severe droughts; increased flooding, more frequent bush fires, impacts on food production and affordability of food supplies, and additional threats to endangered species of plants and animals.”

The motion included that “Council consider introduction of an energy reduction target for 2020 as may be appropriate.”

Cr Bransdon spoke about the positive initiatives by Clean Energy for Eternity on the South Coast with their campaign for 50/50 clean energy by 20/20.

Cr Bransdon’s motion also included that “Palerang should seek funding from Water for the Future, the Australian Government’s $12.9 billion long-term water plan, which identifies among other issues securing water supplies for Australia’s cities and towns as a key priority.”

Cr Moore seconded the motion and added a point that Council should look to hybrid cars and lowering the Council carbon footprint.

Cr Bransdon, Moore, Marjeson, Hart, Harrex, Gardiner for. Cr Horan abstained and Cr Raynolds voted against.
