Braidwood's equestrian Olympian Neale Lavis carried the Olympic Relay Torch along Constitution Avenue in Canberra last Thursday. One of 80 torchbearers selected for the Canberra leg of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay.
Lavis competed in the gold medal winning three-day eventing team at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, also winning the silver medal in the individual event. He also competed at the 1964 Tokyo Games.
77 year old Lavis took off on his torch run at quite a speed, and an Australian Federal Policeman had to ask him to slow down a bit. Mr Lavis said he was chuffed to have been 'runner 007', along with all the security personnel present.
