Library remains unnamed

18 Apr, 2001 09:53 AM
,At the March meeting of Council, Cr Brown moved that in recognition of the lengthy ownership of the local newspapers “The Dispatch” and “The Review”, owned by the Musgrave family in Braidwood and their contribution to the Braidwood community, the council wishes to name its Shire Library :The John Musgrave Library”.

Cr Brown said that “he believed the Musgrave’s founded the Dispatch in 1855 and operated it until it was sold in the 1950’s. It was the second oldest family newspaper in NSW, after the Sydney Morning herald, Judith Wright on the other hand, lived here for 15 years and wrote poetry. She kept all her money in her own pocket.”

A chorus of “Shame” came from the packed public gallery, and the Mayor called the meeting to order.

The Mayor then asked if there was a seconder for the Motion. No seconder was found and the motion lapsed.

The public gallery cheered.
