The Braidwood district's first vineyard, the Half Moon Vineyard at Mongarlowe, are announcing the release of their first vintage. Although a few lucky locals may have had a taste of the first few sample bottles produced since they started bottling mid last year, several new varieties are now being released.
The vines were planted in 2000 at Half Moon on a northerly aspect at 600 metres above sea level which is suitable for cool climate wines. The relatively small vineyard of around 5000 vines, are maintained and harvested by hand, aiming to select a better quality fruit, which is then sent for production and bottling to Mudgee.
Limited stocks of the Pino Gris, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are due for release this month and will be available at Foodworks or by telephoning Mal Sharp on 4842 8067. The vineyard does not take visitors as there are no cellar door sales.
Two more varieties, a chardonnay and a riesling are planned to be added to later this year.
