Palerang Councillor Catherine Moore was announced as the winner of the 2007 Goulburn Art Award on Friday night.
The exhibition was opened by Goulburn Mulwaree Deputy Mayor Ken Sullivan.
Cr Moore decided to attend the opening at the last minute and was delighted with her win.
"It's very exciting and a great honour, especially given that the prize is a solo exhibition at the GRG next year" said Cr Moore.
The award was open to artists and craftspeople of the region, and was judged by Cherry Hood, Andy Townsend and a Goulburn Regional Gallery staff member.
Hood and Townsend agreed that her work was a real standout among the 63 entries.
Moore has been undertaking Master of Visual Arts with Monash University having studied Printmaking at Canberra School of Art 1987-80. She has been in 51 group shows and had 3 solos since 1980.
Last year Moore won the Art Gallery of NSW Elioth Gruner Prize for landscape painting, she was shortlisted for Canberra Art Prize 2005, and has been selected for Portia Geach Portrait Prize in 1992, 1997 and 1999.
The exhibition runs until 6th October.
