NSW Planning Minister Frank Sartor visited Braidwood on Wednesday to see the town for himself and to hear from representative from groups for and against the proposed listing of the town and it's setting on the NSW State Heritage Register. The Ministers visit also brought a media scrum of television cameras to Braidwood, including the Channel 9 helicopter, although no decision about the listing was forthcoming.
Before the three hour meeting taking place at The Doncaster Small Luxury Hotel, Minister Sartor gave a media interview and stated that he had "not learnt the art of pleasing everyone", and when asked about whether he thought either side would accept his decision, that he was "not putting himself up as an envoy to the Middle East."
Also present at the meeting were the Mayor, General Manager, planning staff, John and Mary Mathais and Greg Gilbert representing Save Braidwood Incorporated, Forbes Gordon representing BRASS, Rodney Royds representing the largest landholder in the curtiledge area, Cheryl Raper representing Braidwood Tourism, Andrew Einspruch representing BRAG, Antony Davies representing the Historical Society, and John Mitchell representing the original nominator of the town listing John Durst. The NSW Heritage Office were represented by Reece MacDougal, Robyn Conroy and Murray Brown. Steve Whan, Local Member for Monaro also attended.
The Minister listened and questioned each of those who spoke about specifics of their arguments. Forbes Gordon said that he "thought that the meeting went very well and that the Minister gave everyone a fair hearing. It was clear that he wanted to get his own impression of the various issues that had been raised about Braidwood's heritage listing."
The Minister urged the Council to progress further with the DCP, and suggested that he would like to finalise the matter by the end of January.
Although three Police officers attended from Queanbeyan, the meeting was orderly, and only one placard waving protester stood quietly outside the Doncaster fence, stating that she would be "like Falun Gung outside the Chinese Embassy."
