MPS graduates first EN since 1991

Rebecca Johannessen from Batemans Bay graduated last week as the Braidwood MPS's first (since 1991) trainee Enrolled Nurse.

After a small ceremony and lunch on Friday Rebecca had some words written down to express her her sentiments.

"I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the Greater Southern Area Health Service Trainee Enrolled Nurse Program 2005/2006 at the Braidwood Multi Purpose Service" she said.

"I am the first trainee to achieve enrolment at Braidwood MPS. (Braidwood hospital had a long tradition of training nurses that finished in 1991).

During my training I have spent two blocks in Cootamundra learning the theory of nursing, the rest of the time was spent on the job learning.

I worked in Queanbeyan for three months learning medical and surgical nursing and was also placed in maternity and theatre there.

The other five months were spent at Braidwood MPS where I learnt basic nursing, aged care and community health nursing.

I have had a fantastic year and feel a real sense of achievement now that I am qualified as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse.

I would encourage anyone interested in a nursing career to take this opportunity whether you wish to be an enrolled nurse or use it as a stepping stone to another career as a registered nurse, the choice is yours.

The staff at Braidwood MPS have been fantastic and have showed as much dedication making me into a nurse as I have becoming one. Support and guidance has never been far away both professionally and personally they have done their best to help me manage both during this year. BMPS you have a very professional and dedicated team and I take my hat off to you.

Being your first TEN means we were all thrown in the deep end but it has been smooth sailing. The training I have received at BMPS has been of high quality. I have had exposure to so many more things working in a small MPS as everyone has to be an "all round man". I have helped care for trauma victims in ED, participated early childhood clinics, worked in community health acute care and aged care."

Rebecca concluded that "I am positive that I got as much out of my training as was possible and wish any future trainees the best of luck and leave you in very capable hands."

The Braidwood MPS is now gearing up for the grand opening of the newly refurbished community Health Building on November 9th.
