Music at the Creek

15 Nov, 2006 03:12 PM
The best things about Music at the Creek this year were the impromptu sessions at the bar and the camp fire sessions, late after everyone else had gone to sleep.

Music at the creek this year seemed to be a small affair, however that was far from the truth. Concerts were happening everywhere and upcoming singer songwriters were performing left right and centre; but the real stuff happened by itself after all the hoo ha finished. Members of the Wheeze and Suck band, along with fellow singer Miguel Heatguole from band Triantan, sang traditional songs by the bar, while on the other side a mixture of personalities played a variety of instruments to traditional folk songs. Yes it was diddly diddly, but of the best kind, and from people who know how to fiddle.

The dance floor once more provided a varied programme of belly dance, taught by Erika from the Tallaganda Dance troupe as well as Indonesian and Chinese dance workshops on Sunday. The Chinese dace performance of fan and ribbon dances were remarkably spectacular.

But by far, from this writer's point of view, Dev'lish Mary's performance on Sunday was one of the highlights: 4 barefoot women performing with a variety of string instruments made two folk club presidents waltz with each other.

The weather held out; the rain stayed away and the wind was mild. It was a fabulous weekend. The Braidwood Folk Club is ever so grateful to all its local volunteers and interstate volunteers for all the effort they put in to gt this year's festival up and running. Special mention should go to Sue Rendell, Alison Smith and David Hanrahan-Smith for all the work that they put in throughout the year. Jo and John Weeks also should be mentioned as well as all the billets and volunteers without whom this festival would not have been in existence.

Braidwood Folk Club is always looking for new ideas to create a fun and exciting festival. We are looking for younger members of the Braidwood population to help us in our endeavour to bring music to the region. Planning for next year is already on the way. So if you want to have a say in the choice of music or dance, pease come to us.

We appreciate the support the Braidwood and region community has given us and we hope to continue to work closely with other community organisations to bring about more musical events such as Music at the Creek
