Musica da Camera's first concert for 2009 celebrates with Haydn and Mendelssohn
The program to be performed marks the 200th anniversaries of two of the leading composers of the 18th and 19th centuries: Franz Joseph Haydn (who died in 1809) and Felix Mendelssohn (who was born in 1809).
Barbara Jane Gilby will direct the concert that will include a performance of her arrangement for string orchestra of Haydn's Quartet Op. 1 No. 3.
Samantha Boston will be the soloist in Meldelssohn's Violin Concerto in D minor.
Other works in the program are Samuel Barber's Serenade for String Orchestra, the 1st movement of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and the 1st movement of Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A minor in which the soloist will be 9-year-old local student Laura Nuttall.
The program will be presented on Sunday 5 April at 2.30 pm at Mona, Braidwood, NSW.
Barbara Jane Gilby is held in high regard amongst the musical community having directed and performed extensively both here in Australia and overseas. In 2000, she returned to Canberra to take up a position of Lecturer in Violin at the ANU School of Music.
Samantha Boston comes from a musical family. After thinking about learning the harp or cello, she finally decided on the violin! She studied under Barbara Jane Gilby and has a degree in violin performance from the ANU School of Music.
She now lives in Sydney where she teaches violin and performs with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Sinfonia.
Laura Nuttall is in grade 4 at Bonython Primary School. She has enjoyed music all her life and always has a melody going through her head. Laura has studied violin with Barbara Jane Gilby since 2007.
Musica da Camera celebrates its 30th birthday this year.
