The Commonwealth Government's new My School website www.myschool.edu.au will provide parents with essential information about how their child's school is performing, Premier Kristina Keneally said last week.
Launching the new online resource with Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and NSW Minister for Education Verity Firth at Tempe High School Ms Keneally said:"This is information parents have been telling us they want more of - not less".
"For the first time, parents will have access to information about their child's school academic results, its student population, attendance rates and Year 12 completion," Ms Keneally said.
The My School website gives parents access to the information they need to know about their child's school.
Minister for Education, Verity Firth, said the My School website was one of a range of resources available to parents to help them understand how their child and school are performing. The website will provide a link to the school's annual report and parents can also gain information by meeting with the principal, through parent teacher meetings and by talking to people in their community," Ms Firth said.
The data on the website is sourced from the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results.
Braidwood Central School Principal Rod McClure said "The My School web site will provide parents with the results of four single days of testing in each of Years 3, 5, 7 & 9. They are snapshots taken across ten years of schooling. They are but one measure of a school's performance. Oringinally intended as a diagnostic tool for teachers the tests can have great value in identifying problem areas for individual students."
"I have great faith that the Braidwood community is aware that a school is a many faceted institution. Braidwood Central has had great success in sporting activities, debating, art and drama to name but a few areas. In 2009 fifty percent of our Year 12 cohort gained entry to university. Virtually all the remainder are employed or enrolled in TAFE courses. While a wonderful achievement I would also say that this too is but one measure of a school's success" said Mr McClure. "Schools are institutions that strive for continuous improvement. The My School site provides one measure but it must not be seen as the only one or, indeed, even the most important" he continued.
The new Principal of St Bede's Primary School Mr Gerard Galvin said "St. Bede's community should be most pleased with the 2009 NAPLAN results recently published on the My School web site."
"St Bede's has begun to not only build on the solid achievements in previous years, but also addressing any areas where results were not as expected. A number of specific programs such as spelling groups and specific staff professional development have been targeted for 2010, and in fact commenced in late 2009."
Mr Galvin added that "We must remember however that NAPLAN is a series of 'one-off' test over five areas conducted over three days. It provides a snapshot of a student on that day. It does not take in other offerings from St. Bede's such as Religious Education, sport, pastoral care, music etc. It unfortunately is 'raw' data without enough suitable background information for parents about the all the great things happening at St. Bede's. Learning at St. Bede's is a whole school approach and we feel we are continuing to address the needs of our students, not just in Literacy and Numeracy."
