 New management at Medical Centre

New management at Medical Centre

18 May, 2007 11:07 AM
A not-for-profit medical management company, Rural and Remote Medical Services Ltd. (RARMS), has this month taken over the provision of support services to doctors working at the Braidwood Medical Centre. Following his recent illness, Dr. Danny Stewart approached RARMS to become involved.

RARMS is pleased the new arrangement has the support of both Drs. Nilsson and Cross, who will continue to provide services at the Centre, and is also supported by the Greater Southern Area Health Service and the South East Division of General Practice.

RARMS now employs the surgery manager, nurse and receptionist. Doctors working at the Centre will conduct their own practices in RARMS facilities and with RARMS support. Dr. Nilsson is currently on-call 24/7 as Visiting Medical Officer at the Braidwood MPS. Dr. Nilsson and the Area Health Service are keen to attract another resident GP/VMO to Braidwood to share the on-call workload and increase the services available at the Centre. RARMS is in active discussion with some potential candidates but is also aware there are 180 rural GP vacancies in NSW at present and that finding a doctor for any locality is a challenge.

RARMS was established in 2001 to address severe doctor shortages in remote North West NSW communities. By providing the housing, surgery and support staff for doctors, those communities were successful in recruiting additional doctors. The medical practices RARMS supports have grown to provide a wide range of medical, nursing and allied health services. RARMS will be applying in Braidwood, elements of the "Easy Entry, Gracious Exit" principles it has successfully pioneered elsewhere.

RARMS has also held discussions with the ANU Medical Faculty and in the medium term would like to further develop the Braidwood Medical Centre as a centre of excellence with the capacity to encourage more medical graduates to select a career as rural general practitioners.
