On Monday 23 August the Illawarra/South Coast Regional Final of the 2010 NSW Department of Education and Training Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition was held at Kiama Public School. Eight students in Years 5-6 from public schools around the region had all won their district events to get to this level. Braidwood Central School was represented by Year 6 student and Primary Girl's Captain Jay Davies. The competition involves a prepared speech of 5 minutes and an impromptu of 2 minutes. The prepared speeches all have to have a multicultural content and students can pick from ten different set topics. Jay's speech, which she recently gave at the whole school assembly in Education Week, was on the topic of 'Belonging'. The impromptu topic was 'At the crossroads'. All the prepared speeches were excellent, but the impromptu topic was a tough one to address and has equal weighting. Jay did an excellent job and managed to talk about keeping chickens, replacing unflued gas heaters, the federal election and protecting the environment all in the space of two minutes. Jay won the competition and will now go on to represent BCS at the State final at the ABC Centre in Sydney in November.
