Member for Monaro and Chair of Country Labor, Steve Whan, and the NSW Minister for Local Government, Paul Lynch, were on hand to officially open the new community facility.
With four Bungendore School Captains capably officiating at the ceremony, around 100 people attended, including Mayors and Councillors from adjoining local government areas, although there were very few Bungendore residents.
Thirty five local Council staff moved into the building in March. With its' high ceilings and large white wall expanses, the building will be well suited to additional community uses.
Making his first official duties within Palerang the new Local Government Minister Paul Lynch praised the completion of the building that would bring jobs to Bungendore.
The NSW Government assisted Palerang Council by providing $2.4 million towards the building which Mr Whan described as a "worthwhile community asset." "Palerang Council has achieved the best of both worlds with a most distinctive design delivered within a very modest budget" Whan said.
The building has won a Master Builders Association award for a commercial building constructed under a budget of $3 million.
Mr Whan said that "this is not only boost for Council and staff, but for the village of Bungendore itself, whose businesses are already seeing the benefits of a major office complex in town.
Mr Whan thanked the local school kids, Councillors and staff and the members of the community for coming along to mark the occasion. "I would also like to thank the Wamboin and Bungendore Landcare groups, who volunteered their time, materials and labour to create the beautiful native gardens that surround the new building.
Palerang Council Mayor, Cr Jim Maclachlan, said he and Council are most-pleased with the new Administration building. "We are proud of the new award-winning building and I believe it will serve the community well for many years to come, Cr Maclachlan said. "We are also pleased with the financial support made available from the NSW Government, and in particular, the ongoing support provided by our local Member. Cr Maclachlan praised the vision of former Yarrowlumla Councillor Milton Sim for purchasing the land in the 1990s.
Speaking about Palerang, Minister Lynch said that the heritage listing of Braidwood "reinforces Braidwood's identity and economic future, and is also an important step in preserving an important heritage town in NSW."
He also praised the development of the Rural transaction Centre in Braidwood as a "good example of Council's commitment to linking the needs of local communities with the broader community."
As to the moniker, there's already one big headquarters (HQJOC) being built up the Kings Highway.
