Please don't go B.U.R.R.A.

30 Aug, 2007 03:48 PM
At last Thursday's Council meeting the petition by Burra & Urila Residents & Ratepayers Association (B.U.R.R.A.) to move the localities of Burra, Urila and Royalla into the Queanbeyan local government area was debated, with Council moving not to support the move and not to refer the proposal to the Boundaries Commission.

The meeting was addressed by Ros Bush and Wendy Bell from BURRA who maintained that their process had been an open one. Ms Bell complained of many inaccuracies in the report to Council.

A week earlier a meeting had been held by Queanbeyan City Council for residents to discuss with their councillors their feelings towards the move, and at a Queanbeyan Council meeting following that, Councillors could not decide whether or not to favour the additional residents.

Cr Bransdon said "Palerang has done all the compromising. One section wants to go but we can't dessert the majority. Our future is looking brighter, but if this gets up we'll be right back where we started."

Cr Raynolds said that the BURRA residents would be better off in Palerang in the long term, as a "big fish in Palerang, but a small one in Queanbeyan...I would be very sorry to see you go, and it would hurt this Council beyond repair."

Cr Marjeson was against the motion saying he already had a petition to get rid of Palerang.

Cr Moore said that "I don't want to lose this section of the shire for selfish reasons - I don't want Palerang to collapse as a result and I think there would be a real danger of that happening. But I am opposing the motion, and I feel the need to give a different voice to the voice of Cr Marjason, and the reasons he has given. I would prefer, if I lived in Burra, to live in a rural shire like Palerang, but who am I to say that their community of interest is not Queanbeyan?

The motion was carried with only Crs Moore and Marjeson against.
