St Andrew's Anglican Church Minister Reverend Geoff Hoad was invested as a NSW Police Chaplain by senior chaplain Father Alan Lowe during the medals and awards presentation for Goulburn Local Area Command police and support personnel on Tuesday last week.
Geoff is the 105th NSW Police Chaplain. The ceremony and presentations took place upstairs in the Goulburn Railway Bowling Club conveniently located opposite the Goulburn Police Station.
Revd Hoad's roll is to support police particularly in stressful situations as well as provide support to others as required. This work will not interfere in his work for the local Parish.
Geoff did his Clinical and Pastoral Care Training at the Canberra Hospital and has worked in a chaplaincy role during his time as Curate in the Anglican Church, Young - to staff and patients at the Mercy Care Hospital, Mt. St. Josephs Nursing Home and the Special Needs School in Young. He has also provided pastoral care and counselling to Canberra youth refuge workers and young people at times of critical incidents.
Geoff says, "Chaplaincy is the active role of any Priest in a community - to meet people where they are at, to walk with them, to listen, to encourage them in their life journey and spiritual experiences. I am humbled to be chosen as the 105th Police Chaplain, and to contribute to the wider community of the Braidwood region in this vital role of caring for those who experience critical incidents and traumas as part of their service to the community. The police, emergency services and ambulance are all vital to helping to maintain the wellbeing of any community and we need to care for them in return."
Southern Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch took the opportunity to address the audience and explain the tremendous support provided by chaplains to police in a wide variety of situations. He said that this support was essential in helping police to perform their duty often under very difficult circumstances.
