Around 20 people turned up at the Palerang Council meeting last Thursday as the proposal to build a quarry just over one kilometre from the Nerriga township was discussed. The issue had been held over from the previous Bungendore meeting so that residents may be better able to attend.
The proposed quarry would involve extraction of basalt rock resources from an area of approximately 13.63 hectares. The staged extraction and processing on site of approximately 1.7 million cubic metres of material from quarry has an area of approximately 13.63 hectares
Objections raised centred disruption to the spring on a nearby property, noise from blasting, added traffic to the Nerriga Road and dust.
The applicants, David and Geoff Schmidt, spoke about the need for the quarry to go ahead no, so as to take advantage of the supply for the work on Main Road 92 from Nowra. They maintained that blasting would be intermittent, that there would be more traffic coming from the Braidwood direction if the quarry did not go ahead as material would have to be brought in from that direction, that it would reduce emission from the building of MR92 upgrade, and would employ at least five local people. The Schmidt's also stated that Palerang Council would receive have a reduced rate on material from the quarry.
The motion recommending that the quarry go ahead was passed, with only Cr Moore abstaining.
