Recruiting for BCS Community Tutors

15 Mar, 2007 01:35 PM
When David Jones agreed to join the Braidwood Central School Community Tutors Program, program coordinator, Jonathan Millar could not have been happier.

"Many young people during the course of their schooling face learning difficulties that can be overcome with a little bit of extra help. People like David will be able to help some of these students overcome their problems. Hopefully more members of the community with the right skills and some time to spare will come forward to make a real difference to the prospects of Braidwood secondary students.

David is the first recruit for the new scheme which links secondary students who need help with an aspect of their learning with members of the community who have the skills and the time to help them.

Community tutors sit down with 1 or 2 students for a half hour block to help them with a specific area of learning they are struggling with. The work will always be straightforward and tailored to the skills of the tutor and the needs of the student.

Tutors may work with students on maths problems, reading, handwriting or typing, essay or report writing, and vocabulary. Successful Community Tutors: enjoy the company of young people, are patient and tolerant, are good readers and writers and are prepared to commit to a regular amount of time (1 or 2 hours each week or fortnight).

If you would like to become a Community Tutor please contact Jonathan Millar on 4842 2249.
